I Created a Home Gym and It Was Cheaper Than I Imagined

Let’s face it. No one is going to the gym during COVID-19. Even states that are allowing non-essential businesses like restaurants and hair salons and gyms to open don’t exactly have folks beating a pathway to their door.

But just because you’re stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t exercise. And you don’t need to have a lot of fancy, expensive equipment to do it. Making a DIY home gym with no money isn’t as hard as you think.

It’s also not necessary to have a single room in your house that is devoted to exercise. Many of us just don’t have that kind of space, but it can be helpful to have a central place for all your fitness gear. Before deciding on a space, consider the following –

Is there a carpet? Although it can provide a bit of soundproofing if you’re in an apartment or condo, carpet can become a bit odorous if you’re regularly sweating. If possible, try choosing a room with a hard floor, or get a yoga or exercise mat you can use for sweaty workouts.

Is the ceiling low? If your workouts are going to include jumping or overhead pressing, you’ll want at least eight to 12 inches of extra space overhead when your arms are fully extended.

Is the room well ventilated? If you’re performing a hard cardio exercise or it is warm outside, a hot, muggy room will make you feel suffocated, uncomfortable, and far less motivated to exercise. If you’re lucky enough to have a terrace or balcony consider using those non-traditional spaces. If you have air-con, great. Otherwise, consider investing in a good fan. You can thank me later.

Now that you’ve decided where your space will be, you’re ready to pull it together. You really don’t need big fancy machines like the ones at your local gym. If you dedicate yourself to a consistent schedule, the following home gym essentials will keep you tight and right.

Exercise Mat– We like a thick one that’s easier on your knees and elbows.  body. You won’t be schlepping it back and forth (although it comes with carry-straps) so a serious weightier one is what you need for serious home sessions.

Resistance Bands – We love their versatility. Use them for general exercise, stretching, strength training or power weight programs.

11 piece Resistance Bands Set – A more comprehensive kit to allow exercise in a wider range of areas. Door attachments, Grip handles, and ankle straps provide greater stability for different areas of the body.

Balancing Bricks- A must-have for newbies. Bricks allow you to keep muscle injury at bay. Assume yoga positions more easily without undue stress.

Crystal Water Bottle One of the benefits of working at home is drinking from your crystal-infused water bottle. Recharge your energy and chakras.

2-5 lb. Weights  We’re a big advocate of recycling so grab those empty liter bottles, fill them with water and you have your perfect dumbbell substitutes.

Thai Muscle Rub- We understand “no pain no gain”, That doesn’t mean we like it. If your muscles are screaming apply a light layer of this exotic analgesic rub. Best kept secret ever!.
